Strategic Planning
Make your plan, review your plan, execute your plan.
The beginning of the year is a great time to create a solid plan for what you want the next 12 months to look like. Creating a Strategic Plan for your program allows you to layout your goals, priorities, strengths and weaknesses, and strategies for addressing them. The benefit of creating a Strategic Plan at the beginning of the year is that you are creating a framework to work based on for the rest of the year. You can now create specific Action Plans to achieve specific goals and objectives you address in your Annual Strategic Plan. Your Strategic Plan should include an objective review of previous year. This means reviewing program census averages, referral and admission trends, marketing activities, and barriers the program faced in the previous year. It should also include an objective review of the program’s strengths and weaknesses.
Once the previous year has been reviewed, goals and objectives for the upcoming year should be developed. These goals and objectives should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Based). My recommendation is to make goals around the following metrics:
Census
Referrals
Admissions
Graduations
Marketing Activities
Clinical Outcomes
Throughout the year you will want to come back to this Strategic Plan and review where you stand in terms of achieving your goals.
